What is Obesity?

What is Obesity?

Obesity is a state of excessive accumulation of adipose tissue.
BMI is used to determine obesity.

A BMI of 22 kg/m2, which has the lowest rate of disease complications, is considered the standard weight.

A BMI ≥ 25 kg/m2 is considered obese.

Obesity causes not only metabolic diseases such as diabetes and dyslipidemia, and coronary artery disease and cerebrovascular disease, but also various health problems such as sleep apnea, renal disorders, bone and joint diseases, and menstrual disorders.

Health problems caused by obesity

・Impaired glucose tolerance (diabetic and borderline)
・Dyslipidemia
・Hypertension
・Hyperuricemia and gout
・Coronary artery disease (angina pectoris, myocardial infarction)
・Cerebral infarction
・Fatty liver
・Menstrual abnormalities/infertility
・Sleep apnea syndrome, obesity hypoventilation syndrome
・Musculoskeletal disease
・Obesity-related kidney disease
・The following 11 diseases are listed.

In addition, although not included in the diagnostic criteria, the following diseases are associated with obesity and should be noted: cholelithiasis, venous thromboembolism/pulmonary embolism, bronchial asthma, skin diseases, male infertility, gastroesophageal reflux disease, and a series of malignant diseases (colon cancer, esophageal cancer, uterine cancer, pancreatic cancer, kidney cancer, breast cancer, etc.).

Sleep-disordered breathing

Among sleep-disordered breathing disorders, obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) is closely related to obesity.

The subjective symptoms of OSAS include breathlessness during sleep, daytime sleepiness, and headache upon awakening, but it is usually detected by others through optimal snoring and cessation of breathing during sleep.

OSAS causes hypoxemia and has been linked to cardiovascular events such as hypertension, angina pectoris, myocardial infarction, and stroke.

Heart failure

Severe obesity can lead to heart failure.

The subjective symptoms of heart failure include generalized edema, pulmonary congestion, and dyspnea.

It is known that obstructive sleep apnea is one of the causes of heart failure, which puts a strain on the heart and causes a gradual decline in heart function.

Obesity-related kidney disease

Severe obesity is known to cause inflammation of the kidneys.

In the early stages, proteinuria can be detected on urinalysis, which improves with weight loss, but if left untreated, it can progress to renal failure.

Musculoskeletal disorder

Severe obesity is also an exacerbating factor for osteoarthritis.

Particularly impacting life are hip and knee arthritis, both of which cause deformities in joint cartilage and bone due to muscle weakness, aging, and obesity.

Benefits of Losing Weight

Many overweight people want to lose weight to look better.

However, there are also medical reasons why being overweight should be improved. Heart disease, stroke, type II diabetes, high blood pressure, and certain types of cancer have been linked to being overweight.

If you are already overweight, you need to lose weight systematically. It is recommended that you consult your physician before starting any new fitness program.

Obesity Treatment Goals

The goal of obesity treatment is to eliminate or reduce or prevent the health problems associated with obesity through weight loss.

The first goal is to lose 3% of your current weight in 3-6 months.

It has been proven that a 3-5% weight loss improves triglycerides, HDL-C, LDL-C, HbA1c, liver function, systolic and diastolic blood pressure.

Continued weight loss without rebound is the most effective way to improve complications.
